What is a Mauler?

A mauler is a fighter that batters his opponent, but it is also a rugby player that engages in the famous set-piece called a maul.

The Maulers

Head Coach: Bryan Blanch | Assistant Coaches: T.J. Brockett, Miguel Sanchez

The Chillicothe Maulers are a co-ed middle school rugby team for students in grades 5-8 (4th grade players allowed by exception).

Middle school rugby is very popular in the Chicago area and is spreading to central Illinois. There are two divisions, grades 5-6 ("Juniors") and grades 7-8 ("Seniors"), with age-appropriate rules variations that increase in complexity at each level below high school.

Middle school rugby is played at central festival locations, typically on Sundays in the Chicago area, although 2-3 times each year matches will be in Chillicothe on a weekend.

Boys and girls compete on the same teams in the Juniors division. Starting in 2019 there will be separate boys and girls divisions in grades 7-8, but girls will be allowed to play co-ed during the transition. Chillicothe was one of the pioneers getting a girls-only junior high division started. Teams with fewer than 15 players combine on match days to compete so that everyone gets a chance to play.

The competitive season is in April and May, with the state championships on the Sunday following Memorial Day weekend.

Younger siblings of middle school players can also get in the game! Boys and girls ages 7-10 can attend practices and learn the basic non-contact skills of the game and play touch rugby at the weekly middle school rugby festivals.

The cost is only $5 for the entire year to register.
